The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned consumers not to purchase or use Orlistat, the generic version of Lipitor, because the drug's label warns it can lead to serious heart risks.
The drugmaker has taken an immediate step to reassure consumers about the drug's safety, the FDA said in its latest warning.
It warns people not to take the drug and, if they do take the drug, they could be at risk for heart problems or stroke.
Orlistat is also a medicine used to help obese people lose weight.
The FDA also told patients to avoid the drug altogether, which could increase the risk of heart problems and other serious health risks.
A spokesman for Pfizer, which makes Orlistat, said: "The company is taking immediate action to ensure that patients and physicians are aware of the potential risks and benefits of these medications while on the market."
But he added: "There is currently no approved drug available for use in patients with diabetes, and other conditions that require long-term treatment.
This is particularly true in the case of Orlistat, which is the generic version of Lipitor."
The FDA also warned about a rise in cases of serious side effects associated with the medication, including suicidal thoughts and actions.
A spokesman for Bayer, which makes Orlistat, said: "The FDA has taken an immediate step to ensure patients and physicians are aware of the potential risks and benefits of this medication and are taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety and efficacy of this drug."
The company also said it would not discontinue Orlistat or other related products because of the risk of serious side effects.
The FDA has warned patients not to use the drug.
The agency added: "This warning applies to Orlistat and other related medicines. We strongly recommend patients and physicians inform their prescribing physician of any prescription or nonprescription drug that may interact with Orlistat or other related medicines before taking Orlistat."

Tablets like (the brand name for Orlistat) work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. Ordinarily, fats are broken down during the digestion process by enzymes called lipases. Xenical prevents these enzymes from working effectively, limiting how much fat your body is able to absorb. The remaining, undigested fat is then excreted.
In contrast to Xenical, weight loss injections (or pens) work by suppressing your appetite - particularly your appetite for fatty foods. Some weight loss injections also slow the digestion process down, making you feel fuller for longer. They’re simple to use - check out our for more information.

Dietary fats are large molecules that need to be broken down before they can be absorbed into the body. They are broken down by enzymes called lipases. That is, lipases play an important role in the digestion of dietary fat. When taken with a meal, Xenical interferes with the activity of these enzymes. This allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. Therefore, your body cannot store these excess calories as fatty tissue or use them as a source of energy. This helps you to reduce your weight by burning up fat that you are already carrying, maintain your lower weight and minimise any weight regain. Losing even small amounts of weight and keeping it off produces additional health benefits for you, especially when you are at risk for other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Xenical can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. If these are not treated, they could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Xenical should be taken in conjunction with a well-balanced calorie-controlled diet and other appropriate measures such as exercise.Active Ingredients:Xenical does not contain sucrose, gluten, tartrazine or any other azo dyes.
